Next Book Club Choice: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

The Book Thief

After a bit of a hiatus, book club is back! Our read for this month is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I’ve been wanting to read this book for a few years now and I’m really glad that it has been picked. The blurb:

“HERE IS A SMALL FACT – YOU ARE GOING TO DIE

1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier.

Liesel, a nine-year-old girl, is living with a foster family on Himmel Street. Her parents have been taken away to a concentration camp. Liesel steals books. This is her story and the story of the inhabitants of her street when the bombs begin to fall.

SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATION – THIS NOVEL IS NARRATED BY DEATH

It’s a small story, about:

a girl

an accordionist

some fanatical Germans

a Jewish fist fighter

and quite a lot of thievery.

ANOTHER THING YOU SHOULD KNOW – DEATH WILL VISIT THE BOOK THIEF THREE TIMES”

It all sounds very intriguing… I think the plan is to discuss this book at the end of the month so I expect my review to be up in June. Have you read The Book Thief? What did you think of it?

  1. I read this a year or two ago and loved it. I didn’t expect to, and I wasn’t sure about it at the very beginning, but once I got going I got gripped. Since then I’ve recommended it to everyone and certainly my Middle Daughter also loved it and also several work colleagues. I think it’s a great book so I do hope you all enjoy it!
